Can Chewing Gum Really Clean Your Teeth?

Chewing gums is tasty and fun for people of all ages. We all are fascinated by different flavours and colours of chewing gums that are available in the stores. But at times we wonder, are these chewing gums good for our health? Chewing gum does not fill our stomach so why do people keep chewing gums?

Researchers have found that chewing (gum or other foods) keeps us alert and helps in concentration, memory, and reaction times by increasing the blood flow to the brain and raising the oxygen levels.

Does chewing gum prevent cavities?

The chewing of sugarless gum increases the flow of saliva, which washes the food and other debris, neutralizes the acids formed by plaque producing bacteria, and provides disease substances throughout the mouth.

Sugar Vs Sugar-Free Chewing Gum

Chewing gum with sugar increases the risk of tooth decay and cavity so chewing sugar-free gum should be advocated as they are non-cariogenic and contain fewer calories than sugar.

What is Xylitol?

You may have noticed that some sugar-free gums are sweetened with xylitol. It is a naturally occurring substitute that offers many health benefits. It retards the growth of plaque producing bacteria, prevents their adherence on the tooth surface and extra saliva production which keeps your teeth in good condition.

What are the Benefits of Chewing Gum

  • Reduced bad breath
  • Reduces stress and anxiety
  • Combats nausea
  • Helps you to lose weight
  • Aids acid reflux by acid neutralization in the stomach
  • Relieves ear pain by equalizing pressure in your ears
  • Stimulates bowel movements by increasing the production of gastric juices
  • Can help you quit smoking

Conclusion

Any kind of chewing gum is not a replacement for brushing your teeth.

It is to note that chewing gum cannot replace tooth brushing and flossing, it is just a quick and socially acceptable method to clean your mouth after a meal. Chewing gum can reach surfaces of your teeth but it does not reach in between teeth as flossing does.

In addition to taking care of your teeth by maintaining good oral hygiene, it is important to see your dentist every six months to keep your mouth healthy.
